Lahore High Court (LHC) while hearing the case related to date of election in Punjab has remarked “ leave the governor. Election commission should give the date for election.

PTI leader Asad Umar petition seeking date for polls in Punjab came up for hearing before LHC Friday.

The LHC inquired from the counsel of Election Commission (EC) “ When you will hold election.

The counsel for EC replied in the court “ we are ready to hold election.

Justice Jawad Hassan remarked “ it is matter of public interest. Elections have to take place. No one is taking it seriously. Everywhere it is written election should take place on time.
He further observed where is law officer. You have come here wit h what directives. Why no one has appeared on behalf of governor.

The law officer told the court new headway was made a day before. Governor gave reply to the letter of election commission. Governor wrote that election commission should make consultations with all stake holders.

Justice Jawad Hassan remarked it is mentioned in the constitution the elections are required to be held in 90 days. How can you say the economic situation has deteriorated. Before it economic situation was also bad but the elections were held. There are several decisions of superior judiciary in this regard.

The counsel for the federal government said there is too much time in the completion of 90 days.

Justice Jawad Hassan remarked “ give the date when that when you will hold election. We are talking about what is mentioned in the constitution.

The counsel for federal government said no one is saying that election will not take place.

The court while addressing the counsel of election commission said “ leave the governor. You should give the date. You are doing so much work. You should yourself give the date for election.
. Later, Justice Jawad Hassan directed the counsel for the governor and other parties to submit their detailed replies by Feb 9..

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till February 09.
