Indian minorities are least bothered about the so-called Republic Day celebrations in India as the country’s Constitution has failed to protect their rights.
According to a report by Kashmir Media Service, Indian minorities, including Sikhs, Muslims and Christians have no particular reason to celebrate the Republic Day of a country that treats them as second class citizens.
Both Mumbai-based Centre for Study of Society and Secularism and UK-based Minority Rights Group International have indicated that minority groups in India are increasingly encountering hate crimes, such as lynching, threats, attacks on places of worship and forced conversion. Also, the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) issued a joint statement calling for a total shutdown on Indian Republic Day.
The KMS report maintained that Indian ethnic and religious minorities feel insecure in modern-day India, where they face segregation and persecution because Hindu-extremists are pushing to convert India into Hindu-Rashtra.
It said whether it’s the Naxalbari movement of the 1960s and 70s, the ongoing unrest of the tribals areas, marginalization of minorities, curious case of the Maoists or the bitter relationship rising from the quota system of the upper castes to the rest of society, the Indian state is in constant conflict with her own people.
The report stressed that the Indian Constitution has secular outlook giving equal rights to all irrespective of their ethnic, religious or other background but in reality nothing such is implemented on ground, adding that today’s India is anything but a secular state. It said that in today’s India, RSS/BJP has embarked on an arduous journey to make the country a Hindu Rashtra where Hindus will be superior and non-Hindus will have no place.
The report concluded that India is once again building a false narrative of strong union through Republic Day celebrations, however, the fact of the matter is that this is a fake union created through threats, coercion and annexation.
