Parliamentary leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) Maulana Lutfur Rehman on Thursday called for a joint political strategy to address the deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying lasting peace was essential for economic stability and prosperity.
Speaking on the floor of the provincial assembly during an ongoing session, he said the province had been facing unrest for over three decades, resulting in significant loss of lives. “We have been continuously carrying the funerals of our people, including our children and elders, while both civilians and security forces have made immense sacrifices,” he said.
Mr Rehman stressed that without establishing peace, economic progress and development would remain unattainable. He urged lawmakers to prioritise the issue and move beyond statements and condemnations.
He called for activation of the peace committee formed by the speaker and emphasised the need for serious negotiations and a comprehensive action plan. “Mere statements and condemnation will not solve the problem. Practical steps and serious efforts are required,” he said.
The JUI-F leader also urged all political parties to sit together and develop a consensus-based strategy, similar to the approach adopted for the 18th Amendment. He said constitutional powers available to the provinces should be effectively utilised through legislation and implementation.
Referring to recent incidents, including drone strikes, he said such attacks were not new and had affected both tribal and settled areas, resulting in civilian casualties. He criticised the lack of a coordinated response, saying the issue was often limited to verbal condemnation.
Mr Rehman said the responsibility to devise and implement a plan of action rested with the government, adding that the opposition was ready to offer constructive input to address the challenges facing the province.
