The Provincial Election Commission on Wednesday observed the National Voter Day across the province in order to create awareness about the importance of registration as voters.
A spokesman of the Provincial Election Commission said that various seminars and awareness walks were arranged in connection with the day in all the districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while a major function of the day was organized in Peshawar.
Member Election Commission of Pakistan, Justice retired Ikramullah Khan, the chief secretary, Inspector General of Police, IGFC, administrative officers, representatives of various schools of thought and politicians attended the main event.
The election commission presented shields to heads of various government departments in recognition of their cooperation with the commission during the polls.
Provincial Election Commissioner Shamshad Khan said on this occasion that under the constitution conduct of free, fair and impartial is the prime responsibility of ECP. He said that an awareness campaign has been launched by the Election Commission to bring the youth into the national mainstream, the aim of which is to make the youth recognize the importance of voting and their power, so that the turnout in the upcoming general elections will increase significantly.
Mr Shamshad shared that a total of 20,821,301 voters are registered in KP, including 11,436,241 male voters and 9,385,060 female voters.
ECP efforts are underway to minimize gender gap, adding that it is an offense to prevent women from voting.
Speaking on this occasion, Chief Secretary Dr Shahzad Khan Bangash said that the administration is bound to provide all kinds of support to the ECP, which is a constitutional and independent institution, and between the provincial administration and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Whether it is the holding of local body elections in two phases, or the process of revision of electoral rolls, or the holding of by-elections, the administration across the province has been proactive in fulfilling its duties as per the instructions of the Commission.
He also assured in connection with the upcoming general elections that the provincial administration will cooperate with the Election Commission.
