KP: event to mark World Water Day held

Speakers at a programme held here on Wednesday in connection with the World Water Day stressed the need for efforts to conserve water resources for healthy life as well as socio-economic development of the population.
World Water day is celebrated on March 22 every year to spread awareness about the water crisis all over the world. World Water Day 2023 aims to achieve the vision of sustainable water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The programme was organized by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project in collaboration with Department of On-farm Water Management and Department of Water Resource Management, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences, University of Agriculture Peshawar titled “Accelerating Change to Solve the Water and Sanitation Crises”.
The chief guest of the program was Caretaker Minister for Agriculture Abdul Halim Kasuria.
The programme was attended by Secretary Agriculture Dr Muhammad Israr Khan, Vice Chancellor (VC) University of Agriculture Peshawar Dr Jahan Bakht, Director General (DG) on Farm Water Management KP Javed Iqbal, Dean Faculty of Crop Production Sciences Meritorious Prof Dr Fida Muhammad and representatives of public and private sectors.
Dr Jahan Bakht shed light over the challenges facing water and said that population growth, shrinking agricultural land and climate change are big problems for water.
He said that water should be used as needed and the habit of saving water should be adopted.
Abdul Halim Kasuria appreciated the performance of Agriculture University Peshawar, Department of Agriculture and on-farm water management, he also emphasized on imparting information and technology to the landowners.
Professor Dr Jamal Khattak and Dr Naveedullah gave lectures on celebrating World Water Day and Chairman Department of Water Resource Management Dr Muhammad Zubair thanked the participants.
The participants of the programme also held a walk to highlight the importance of water in which the participants raised banners.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project was launched with the support of the World Bank under the leadership of on-farm water management with the aim of increasing the productivity of small farms through improved irrigation to meet the food and agricultural commodity needs of the growing population.
