Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan on Saturday said that free and responsible journalism is the foundation of a democratic society and essential for ensuring transparency, accountability and public awareness.
In his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3, Mr Jan emphasised that access to reliable information and the media’s role in fostering dialogue and mutual trust were crucial for peace, economic stability, sustainable development and the protection of human rights.
He noted that while the speed of information dissemination had increased significantly in the present era, challenges such as fake news, propaganda and the misuse of artificial intelligence were also emerging, undermining public trust.
Expressing concern over growing pressures on press freedom worldwide, he said that threats to journalists and their economic hardships required urgent attention.
The special assistant reaffirmed that the KP government remained committed to safeguarding press freedom, ensuring the protection of journalists and promoting their professional rights, adding that steps were being taken in this regard.
He also paid tribute to journalists who had lost their lives in the line of duty, saying their services and sacrifices would always be remembered with respect and honour.
