Data shows that 52% of women in KP and 66% of merged districts are victims of violence

End Violence against Women and Girls (AVAWG), an alliance of United National Women chapter has hailed “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Domestic Violence against Women (Prevention and Protection legislation” and termed the move a historical initiative to combating different type’s violence against women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club (PPC) here on Tuesday, the co-chairman of the AVAGWG, Qamar Naseem and other women rights activists said that the provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) in KP, after a long delay, passed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Domestic Violence against Women (Prevention and Protection) Bill.
Qamar Naseem said that the legislation will reduce the incidences of domestic violence against women, protecting them from sexual, psychological and economic abuse, and will provide with some degree of security against violence and exploitation, particularly within the home in KP.
He said that after the legislation, there is a need for greater collaboration within the concerned sectors, with obligations for government departments and service providers to consider how they collaborate, including sharing information in the best interests of safety.
A civil society representative, Khurshid Bano said that the civil society has played a key role in drafting the bill for legislation.
She said that according to data released by the Pakistan Health and Demographic Survey for 2017-2018, 52% of women in KP and 66% of newly merged districts are victims of violence.
Civil Society representatives including Khurshid Bano, Tahira Kaleem, Nazira Sayeed and others pay tribute to the PTI provincial government and demand that the government to implementation the legislation in letter and spirit to end the menace of domestic violence against women and girls in KP.
