National Assembly Standing Committee on Food Security, Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Meeting with Mr. Muhammad Azhar Malik Vice President Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company
ISLAMABAD
An agreement has been signed between Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company for the promotion of desert crops in Thar area. Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali Chairman PARC and Vice President Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company Mr. Muhammad Azhar Malik signed the agreement.
During the visit of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research headed by Rai Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal, Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council briefed the Members in detail about the Bio saline agriculture initiatives in the desert area of Thar.
The NA committee also met with Mr. Muhammad Azhar, Vice President of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company and visited various fields and coal mines sites. On the occasion, Members of National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, Mian Muhammad Shafiq, Mr. Kamaluddin, Mr. Muhammad Ishaq, Secretary, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Dr. Younis Arain, Director General PARC SAARC Karachi and other senior officials were also present.
Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali said that since 2018, work is being done on arid horticultural crops like Apple Bair, Chico, Lemon, Forage and Cactus in Thar Desert of Pakistan, the results of which are encouraging.
This will be beneficial for the development of area and will further increase the economic development of the people of Thar Coal Block-II.
In addition a Diversity Park has been set up on 2 acres which has about 18 species of plants including different types of grasses, aloe vera and trees such as kandi, tiger, jungle jalebi, Australian tiger, neem and combat etc.
Recently, in collaboration with PARC, olive plants are being grown experimentally in the hot desert region to test the suitability in this area.
Mr. Muhammad Azhar Malik, Vice President, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company, said that our cooperation spans almost three and a half years. In collaboration with PARC, currently we are working on apple bair, chico, lemon, fodder and cactus.
Earlier, we have developed 20 acres of orchards and fodder under high performance irrigation system established in collaboration with PARC-AZRC Umerkot which has yielded promising results in Thar Desert.
Due to shortage of water in Thar, the crops are being cultivated with salt water on high Official irrigated system. Mr. Muhammad Azhar Malik, Vice President, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company appreciated the efforts of PARC in the field of agriculture and also thanked to Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Chairman PARC for continuous support.
