A meeting of the Standing Committee of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly on Higher Education, Archives and Libraries was held on Tuesday at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Standing Committee and Member of the Provincial Assembly, Muhammad Anwar Khan, a handout said.
Members of the Standing Committee and Members of the Provincial Assembly, Abdul Muneem Khan, Iftikhar Ali Mashwani, Hamid-ur-Rehman, and Ms. Rehana Ismail, attended the meeting.
The Special Secretary for Higher Education, along with the relevant staff, officials from the Law Department, the Information and Technology Department, and officers of the Provincial Assembly were also present. During the meeting, the proposed amendment bill to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act, 2012 was discussed.
The bill had been approved by the Cabinet and presented in the Provincial Assembly on 25 January 2026, after which it was referred to the Standing Committee for further consideration.
Committee members held a detailed discussion on various clauses of the bill and thoroughly reviewed its legal and academic aspects.
One of the important provisions of the amendment bill proposed a change in the name of the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Swat. Under this proposal, it was recommended that the new name of the university be “University of Computing Sciences and Information Technology, Swat.”
The Standing Committee concluded that the proposed new name is fully aligned with the curriculum and academic disciplines taught at the university. In view of this, the amendment bill was unanimously approved and referred back to the House for further necessary action.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Chairman of the Standing Committee Muhammad Anwar Khan emphasized that the legislative process should be transparent, purposeful, and aligned with the educational needs of the province, so that students of KP may have access to quality higher education and benefit from it to the fullest extent.
