Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq has become talk of the town over social media after he defended Pakistan team’s performance in quite an ‘ultra religious’ manner.
Pakistani were ripped apart in the third Twenty20 International at National Stadium Karachi, where the Green Shirts had to face a thumping defeat at the hands of England by 63 runs. The middle order failed once again.
At the post match presser, coach Saqlain Mushtaq, who answered journalists’ spicy questions over team’s disappointing performance in the third T20I, said Pakistan’s defeat was by ‘God’s will’.
“Like there is night after day, winter after summer, the game also goes in a similar way. Wins and losses are just part and parcel of what should be accepted. Qudrat ka nizam hai, hum kya kar sakte hai (This is a law of nature, this is not in our control).
Everyone associated with Pakistan cricket want the team to win. Even we want. But we tried and showed the right intent. Pray for us and we will keep on trying,” Saqlain said while answering a question.
To this, cricket fans are reacting sarcastically on social media and asking whether what the coaching staff’s role is, if the nature has everything to do with team’s performance.
“He is probably trying to talk about the law of averages, but with a stupid analogy. Law of averages means you will be humbled at some point, it doesn’t mean you will be humbled every alternate day,” a social media user wrote in his tweet.
“Seriously pathetic and ‘mufti’ style unappreciated answers. [Saqlain Mushtaq] competition is the essence of sports. Don’t kill him just to cover up your team’s weaknesses. Nature does not force you to play 7 T20I matches against the best team. Come on with some solid cricket reasons,” another fan showed his dismay.
Fans are also questioning the excessive linking of religion with sports by the retired and currently playing Pakistan players.
