AI expert Asim Javid, CEO of AI GEO Navigators, has urged Pakistan to sustain international attention on India’s actions regarding water flows under the Indus Waters Treaty, calling them a serious concern. Talking to media, he said Pakistan should project its vindication following the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s decision at the global level to garner diplomatic support, ensure wider dissemination of its legal and technical position, and expose India’s alleged violations of the treaty.
He said Artificial Intelligence (AI) could play a transformative role in strengthening Pakistan’s water security by improving river monitoring, forecasting water availability and supporting evidence-based water management amid growing transboundary water challenges. The expert proposed developing a Flow Manipulation Advisory System using AI to monitor and assess water availability at critical points, particularly in view of upstream interventions affecting flows into Pakistan.
Highlighting the need to utilise floodwaters better, he said Pakistan should tap surplus water during flood seasons, particularly in areas along the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, through decentralised water storage systems, groundwater recharge and the construction of retention ponds.
He said advanced AI-based systems could help authorities analyse real-time hydrological data, anticipate fluctuations in river flows and improve planning for water distribution and storage.
“These regions consist largely of plains where the construction of large reservoirs is not feasible, making decentralised water management solutions more practical and effective,” he added.
Asim Javid further said AI Geo Navigators, integrating Artificial Intelligence, GeoAI, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydrological modelling, could significantly enhance Pakistan’s capacity to monitor river flows, detect unusual upstream changes, forecast water shortages or sudden releases and improve reservoir operations and water allocation through real-time decision-support systems.
He said adopting such technologies would help Pakistan build a more resilient and data-driven water management framework capable of responding effectively to emerging regional water challenges.
