PESHAWAR
Adviser to the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Local Government, Communications and Works, Agriculture and Housing, Asif Rafiq, has directed the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) to prepare a comprehensive plan to address traffic congestion in the provincial capital, including the construction of underpasses and overhead bridges at busy intersections.
He issued the directives while chairing a meeting here on Monday to review progress on ongoing and proposed development projects in Peshawar, according to a handout.
During the meeting, the PDA director general briefed participants on the city’s traffic situation, ongoing development schemes and future infrastructure requirements.
Several proposals were discussed to improve traffic flow, including the expansion of Hashtnagri Bridge, extension of Faqirabad Bridge up to Government College Chowk, and construction of underpasses at Ram Das Bazaar, Jail Chowk and Shoba Bazaar Chowk.
The meeting also discussed a traffic management plan for Town Chowk on Khyber Road to reduce congestion and facilitate commuters.
Mr Rafiq directed the relevant authorities to assess the proposed projects on technical and practical grounds and prioritise them according to public needs. He stressed that development initiatives should offer sustainable solutions to the city’s growing urban challenges.
He said improving traffic flow, providing better commuting facilities and bringing urban infrastructure in line with modern requirements were among the government’s priorities.
The adviser also directed the PDA to take steps to improve the city’s appearance and ensure proper landscaping, plantation and flower cultivation. He said particular attention should be given to areas along the motorway and GT Road to make Peshawar a cleaner and greener city.
Emphasising the need to improve traffic management on Khyber Road, he said public convenience should remain the foremost consideration in the planning and execution of development projects.
