ISLAMABAD
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia on Saturday called on the public to strictly follow safety measures, avoid crossing flowing water, and refrain from unnecessary travel, especially for tourists and commuters in flood-prone or hilly areas, as the fresh monsoon spell is expected to begin on July 28 this year.
In an exclusive conversation with a local news channel, the PDMA DG highlighted that, according to the latest meteorological predictions, parts of Punjab and other cities are expected to experience heavy rainfall from the 28 to 31 July.
DG PDMA further mentioned that the Chief Minister Maryum Nawaz is actively monitoring the situation and is committed to ensuring that effective measures are taken to safeguard lives and property. The CM’s focus is on minimizing any potential damage and maintaining public safety throughout the monsoon spell.
Kathia highlighted that the government is prioritizing awareness campaigns to keep the public informed about the risks and necessary precautions.
In addition to the safety guidelines, PDMA DG Kathia emphasized the importance of media-driven campaigns aimed at spreading awareness about the monsoon-related risks, especially the impact on health.
He stated that the government is collaborating with local media outlets to run informational drives that educate the public on how to stay safe during heavy rainfall, prevent waterborne diseases and manage potential health hazards like flooding-related infections.
These media campaigns will focus on advising the public about maintaining hygiene, ensuring clean drinking water and using protective measures against vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue, he added.
He urged the public to stay vigilant during this period and follow all necessary safety protocols to minimize the risk of accidents, especially in flood-prone and hilly areas.
Kathia also advised unnecessary travel and emphasized the importance of avoiding crossing flooded roads or rivers.
To ensure public safety and a coordinated response, the PDMA DG has instructed all Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners across the province to remain on high alert. He called for close monitoring of the situation and quick action in case of any emergencies.
Kathia stressed that local authorities should be prepared to manage any potential disruptions caused by the weather conditions, especially in vulnerable regions.
Additionally, the PDMA Chief directed the Civil Defense, Rescue 1122, and other relevant departments to finalize their emergency response plans ahead of the monsoon rains.
He emphasized that these agencies must be ready for rapid deployment to assist affected communities and provide timely aid.
With the forecast predicting significant rainfall, Kathia reassured the public that all necessary measures are being put in place to minimize the impact of the monsoon.
In case of emergencies, the public can contact PDMA helpline 1129 for assistance, he concluded.
