The Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 is already stirring controversy ahead of the draft with its player categorization process, raising questions about fairness and consistency.
In the PSL, local player categories are initially determined by franchises, each of which can recommend five players. However, when disagreements arise, the final decisions fall to the national selection committee.
This year, former Test cricketers Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, alongside retired umpire Aleem Dar, were tasked with resolving disputes—a move that has raised eyebrows in the cricketing fraternity.
One of the most contentious decisions involves Multan Sultans’ Usman Khan. The prolific opener finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the previous PSL season, amassing 430 runs at an extraordinary average of 107.50.
Despite four franchises advocating for Usman to be placed in the Platinum category, the selection committee demoted him to the Diamond category.
This decision has puzzled fans and analysts alike, particularly given his continued involvement in domestic and international T20 cricket.
Lahore Qalandars’ Abdullah Shafique, who has not played a T20 match since the last PSL season, was controversially promoted from the Gold to Diamond category.
Meanwhile, Karachi Kings’ Hasan Ali was elevated from Diamond to Platinum, reportedly because the team lacked a player in the top category.
The inclusion of retired international cricketers Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim in the Platinum category has also fueled debate, with critics questioning the criteria for such promotions.
The PSL player relegation and retention announcements are expected by the end of December, providing clarity on the final rosters. PSL 10 Player Draft is scheduled for January 11, with Gwadar hosting the event.
