In meeting with Iran’s president
Premier emphasises importance of restraint and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of States meeting in Bishkek. The meeting was attended by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials were also present.
During the warm and cordial meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed the close and longstanding ties between Pakistan and Iran and emphasized the need to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest.
They agreed to build upon the decisions taken during President Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan in June this year and also reviewed ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and people-to-people contacts.
The two leaders exchanged views on the evolving regional situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sincere efforts for regional peace and said the recent visit of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to Tehran and his constructive engagements augured well for peace-building efforts. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of restraint and sustained diplomatic engagement for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
He also underscored the need to build upon the understandings reached under the Islamabad MoU, describing it as the only viable pathway towards enduring regional peace.
President Masoud Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s consistent diplomatic efforts for regional peace and security and reaffirmed Tehran’s strong desire to further deepen cooperation with Pakistan across a wide range of sectors.
The Iranian President said Pakistan-Iran relations were rooted in centuries of shared history, culture and faith and stressed the need for greater unity among the Muslim Ummah to address contemporary challenges.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited President Pezeshkian to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience.
President Pezeshkian, meanwhile, invited the Prime Minister to attend the forthcoming ECO Summit scheduled to be held in Tehran in December 2026.
