In a decisive move to tackle the escalating financial crisis in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership has swung into action, signaling a renewed push for fiscal relief from the federal government.
According to party sources, a formal decision has been made to demand a special financial package from the federal authorities. The GB government is expected to formally request immediate funds and the clearance of outstanding dues, pressing Islamabad to fulfill its financial obligations toward the region.
High-level negotiations are being prepared to address the crisis comprehensively, sources revealed. The government will also seek additional federal grants to ensure the timely completion of ongoing development projects, which have been stalled or delayed due to severe resource constraints.
In parallel, a comprehensive plan is being formulated to expand Gilgit-Baltistan’s financial base and reduce its long-standing dependency on federal transfers.
Options for NFC-style fiscal arrangements—similar to the National Finance Commission award that governs revenue distribution among provinces—are under active consideration, alongside constitutional and administrative mechanisms aimed at achieving long-term fiscal stability.
The leadership has made it clear that if adequate federal cooperation is not forthcoming, alternative financial strategies may be pursued to safeguard the region’s economic interests.
“Pressure will be mounted on the federal government to fulfill its responsibilities toward ensuring financial stability in Gilgit-Baltistan,” sources said. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to secure the region’s economic rights and accelerate development in the strategically important territory.
