ISLAMABAD, Dec 23 (Online): President Arif Alvi has approved Prime Minister (PM) recommendation for sending reference to Supreme Court (SC) under article 186 of the constitution and signed the reference.
President has sought SC opinion on PM proposal related to matter of public interest on holding Senate election through open ballot/ show of hand.
Opinion from SC has been solicited through reference for amending section 122 (6) of Election Act-2017 without making amendment in the constitution.
President has approved PM proposal for sending reference to SC under article 186 of the constitution.
It may be mentioned federal cabinet on December 15 has already approved sending reference to SC to seek its opinion. Government wants the upcoming election of Senate be held under show of hand. The cabinet was informed there is no restriction apparently in the constitution for holding polls through open ballot.
