Lawyer and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Moazzam Butt on Thursday urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to resolve the ongoing dispute over the administration of Edwardes College, warning that the prolonged legal battle had adversely affected the institution’s academic standards and reputation.
Addressing a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) alongside Father Shahid Younis, general secretary of the Diocese of Peshawar, Mr Butt said the dispute between the provincial government and the governor over the college’s administrative authority had undermined one of the province’s oldest educational institutions.
He claimed the uncertainty had prompted students to seek transfers to other colleges, while the institution had also suffered financially. Mr Butt said the ongoing litigation had discouraged qualified principals from taking charge of the college, as they feared becoming entangled in legal proceedings.
Recalling his association with the institution, he said he was an alumnus of Edwardes College and that his children had also studied there before pursuing careers in the armed forces and diplomacy.
He called on the provincial government and the governor to end what he described as a “power struggle” and hand over the administrative affairs of the college to the church, arguing that such a move would help restore the institution’s academic excellence and promote religious harmony. Mr Butt alleged that the college’s educational standards had declined, faculty quality had suffered and some academic programmes had ceased during the prolonged dispute.
