Rising Sutlej water levels and impending floods put Pakistani districts on alert

The authorities on Thursday warned that the water level in the Sutlej was constantly rising as India released 100,000 cusecs of current into the river. In this context, New Delhi has issued an urgent warning letter to Pakistan.
Around 100,000 cusecs of water has entered Pakistan via the Ferozepur Barrage, according the letter indicated, adding more another 190,000 cusecs was travelling towards Ferozepur from Harike Barrage.
The Kasur district administration has issued a high warning for Ganda Singhwala and Sutlej River is in a low-level of flood near Ganda Singhwala, a PDMA spokesman said, informing Ganda Singhwala was experiencing a flood current of 69,220 cusecs.
A moderate to high-level flood was likely in Ganda Singhwala over the next 24 hours, the spokeswoman said, explaining, India was scheduled to release further water until August 20. Districts of Okara, Kasur, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Lodhran, Multan, and Bahawalpur are likely to be hit from the floods in Sutlej River.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted rain with strong winds and thunder in different cities of the country in the next 24 hours. The Department of Meteorology said the weather would remain hot and humid in most of the plain areas of the country, while there was a possibility of rain with strong winds and thunder in North-Eastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and adjacent hilly areas.
Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Murree and Galiat including Gujranwala, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Murree and Galiat may experience rain with strong winds and thunderstorms. In addition to hot and humid weather in Islamabad, rain is expected at a few places.
Heavy rain with thunder has been predicted in different cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar and Kohat. Hot and humid weather and dusty winds are likely to prevail in most districts of Sindh, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to remain partly cloudy apart from strong winds and thundershowers.
