Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has commuted the death sentence of a 76-year-old convict in a double murder case to life imprisonment, citing his advanced age and frailty. The court observed that the killings were not premeditated but resulted from a bloody confrontation that began over a minor dispute in a lane regarding the passage of livestock. The conflict reportedly escalated from a physical altercation between the convict’s wife and the female victim. The prosecution had claimed that the convict committed the murders due to animosity over an alleged buffalo theft case. However, the court noted that the prosecution failed to provide any documentary evidence of such enmity. Additionally, the absence of shell casings at the crime scene rendered the recovery of the weapon less significant. The incident occurred in March 2015 in Dera Sodhi Mari, Sargodha, where two women were killed and one man injured. The trial court had sentenced the convict to death in 2019, and Lahore High Court upheld the death sentence in November 2024. Online
