SC orders HEC to close illegal campus of private universities

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has ordered Higher Education Commission (HEC) to close illegal campus of private universities set up all over the country.

The court also maintained that the HEC should provide degrees in specific way to the students who have passed through illegal campus of universities.

The court maintained there was question before the court can private universities set up their subordinate campus outside their jurisdiction or otherwise. HEC made it clear they are not allowed to set up their campus outside their limits. HEC issued alerts to private universities several time for setting up their illegal campus.

The court maintained HEC is of the view cooperation from federation and provinces is inevitable to end illegal activities., Federal and provincial governments extended no cooperation to the HEC. The implementation of uniform policies of HEC be ensured all over the country. No compromise will be made on providing higher education to the young generation. Federal and provincial governments should cooperate fully to maintain the standard of education set by HEC.

A 3-member bench of SC presided over by Justice Umar Atta Bandial took up the case for hearing Wednesday.

Ali Zafar counsel for the students petitioners argued his clients who are students had gone to Lahore High Court (LHC) in connection with their degrees. LHC declared the campus of private universities illegal. The court had ordered NAB to take action against the private universities.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial remarked HEC has powers. NAB does not need to investigate of the matter. If HEC is weak then we will order the federation to amend the laws. LHC gave correct and fact based decision.

It is to mention here that Preston and Al Khair universities had set up illegal campus in Lahore and Karachi.

The students of these universities had resorted to court.
