Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information and Public Relations Minister Shafi Jan on Friday accused the federal government of violating court orders concerning the hospitalisation of PTI founder Imran Khan, saying the alleged move amounted to contempt of court and undermined the supremacy of the Constitution and law.
Mr Jan said transferring Imran Khan to PIMS instead of Shifa International Hospital was evidence of what he described as the government’s “cowardice, stubbornness and fear” of the PTI founder. He said the Supreme Court had issued clear directions regarding keeping Imran Khan in hospital and providing him with the required medical facilities. However, he alleged that the federal government instead transferred him back to Adiala Jail, which, he claimed, amounted to open contempt of court.
The provincial minister said an application would be filed seeking contempt proceedings against the federal government over its alleged violation of judicial orders. “The federal government will now have to answer for its violation of the court’s orders,” he said.
Mr Jan alleged that the government was “playing with Imran Khan’s health” and described it as a serious matter rather than mere negligence. He accused the federal government of exceeding all limits through what he called authoritarian measures and said continued violations of the Constitution were no longer acceptable. He said the federal government should understand that the country could not progress without the supremacy of the Constitution and law. He further alleged that the government was disregarding constitutional and legal principles and would have to answer for its actions.
The provincial minister also accused Federal Minister Atta Tarar of misleading the public regarding the presence of PTI workers outside the hospital. He alleged that government ministers had been misleading the public about Imran Khan’s health since the beginning.
Mr Jan said the PTI’s street movement was continuing under the leadership of KP Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi in accordance with Imran Khan’s directives.
He said the chief minister would visit Hangu and Buner on Saturday and Sunday respectively and would also travel to different parts of the country as part of the street movement. The information minister said preparations for the planned September 27 long march to Islamabad were under way and would now be accelerated.
He said the movement for Imran Khan’s release and the supremacy of the Constitution and law would continue with full force at every level.
