ISLAMABAD: In a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, Shifa International Hospital (SIH) has become the first hospital in the world to simultaneously secure Joint Commission International (JCI) Clinical Care Program Certifications for both Acute Ischemic Stroke and Acute Coronary Syndrome programs, setting a new global benchmark in specialized patient care.
The unprecedented distinction places SIH among a select group of leading healthcare institutions worldwide. According to the hospital, only five hospitals across the globe currently hold either of the two certifications individually, while Shifa stands alone in achieving both certifications at the same time.
The certifications were awarded following comprehensive evaluations conducted by JCI surveyors, who examined every stage of patient care, including emergency response, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and long-term management. The rigorous assessment confirmed that Shifa’s stroke and cardiac care programs meet the highest international standards for quality, safety and clinical outcomes.
The achievement reflects the coordinated efforts of multidisciplinary teams comprising physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, quality assurance experts and support staff, all working together to deliver evidence-based and patient-centered care.
Expressing his gratitude, Chief Executive of Shifa International Hospitals Limited, Dr. Zeeshan Bin Ishtiaque, described the accomplishment as a historic moment for both the institution and the country.
“Alhamdulillah, this is a proud and historic moment for Shifa. It is the result of the dedication and collective effort of our entire team. We are deeply grateful to Almighty Allah for His blessings and guidance throughout this journey,” he said.
The dual certification also marks a significant milestone for Pakistan, making Shifa the first hospital in the country to receive JCI Clinical Care Program Certification in both Acute Ischemic Stroke and Acute Coronary Syndrome. The recognition is expected to further strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide timely, specialized and high-quality treatment to patients suffering from life-threatening stroke and heart emergencies.
The latest accomplishment comes just days after Shifa earned JCI accreditation as an Academic Medical Center, underscoring the institution’s growing international reputation for excellence in healthcare, medical education and research.
Highlighting the hospital’s long-term vision, Dr. Zeeshan emphasized that quality improvement remains an ongoing process.
“Accreditation is a journey, not a destination,” he said, adding that Shifa remains committed to continuously enhancing healthcare services and improving patient outcomes across Pakistan.
Healthcare experts view the dual certification as a major boost for Pakistan’s medical sector, demonstrating that local institutions can successfully meet and exceed globally recognized standards of clinical care.
