Steps afoot to bridge gap between male, female voter lists: Javed

Joint Provincial Election Commissioner Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Javed Khan on Wednesday said that the Election Commission of Pakistan was taking all possible steps to bridge the increasing gap between male and female voters in the country. He made these remarks while addressing a training workshop on women’s identity cards and voter registration in Peshawar.
The workshop was organized by the Election Commission in collaboration with International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES).
Muhammad Javed Khan said that the difference between women’s voter registration and male voters was more than 10 per cent in the 2017 voter lists in the country, adding that lack of women’s identity cards was a major reason for creating the gaps.
The ECP in collaboration with NADRA and partner organizations had initiated started a mobile registration campaign in 2017 to facilitate women for acquiring CNIC at their doorsteps, he informed.
Muhammad Javed Khan said that a joint meeting of the representative organization and NADRA representatives under the supervision of the District Election Commissioner has decided the strategy for arranging NADRA’s mobile registration van in specific blocks.
Joint Provincial Election Commissioner shared that the fourth phase was being formally launched in the merged districts of Khyber, Bajaur, Mohmand, Orakzai and Kurram.
The Election Commission and NADRA officials need to work with local elders and civil society to make the campaign a success by reducing the difficulties in getting women’s identity cards.
Earlier, Senior Public Relations Officer Sohail Ahmed and Assistant Director Gender Affairs Syed Aun Naqvi gave a detailed briefing to the participants regarding the campaign.
