Marking the significance of Earth Day, President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) Sardar Tahir Mehmood has called for urgent and coordinated action to address climate change and promote effective water management in order to ensure sustainable economic growth and environmental protection in Pakistan.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said that Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility of governments, businesses, and citizens to safeguard the planet and its natural resources for future generations. He urged all segments of society to participate in the global spirit of “Give an Hour to Earth”, encouraging individuals and organizations to dedicate time and effort towards environmental protection and responsible resource use.
Sardar Tahir Mehmood noted that climate change has emerged as one of the most serious global challenges, posing significant threats to agriculture, water resources, infrastructure, and public health.
He observed that countries like Pakistan are particularly vulnerable to climate-related impacts including floods, droughts, heatwaves, and extreme weather events that endanger livelihoods and economic stability.
Highlighting the growing water crisis, he said that sustainable water management has become indispensable for long-term development. Pakistan is facing increasing water scarcity, and efficient use of water in agriculture, industry, and urban sectors is essential to conserve resources and ensure food and energy security.
The ICCI President urged the government to formulate comprehensive and forward-looking policies that promote climate resilience, encourage investment in renewable energy, and support initiatives aimed at conserving water resources. He also emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to implement climate-friendly projects and sustainable development programs.
Senior Vice President Tahir Ayub stressed the need to raise public awareness about environmental protection, adding that responsible consumption of water and energy must become a national priority. Educational institutions, civil society organizations, and the media should play a proactive role in spreading awareness about climate change and inspiring communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
Vice President Irfan Chaudhry reaffirmed that the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry will continue to support initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and responsible resource management. He emphasized that the message of Earth Day should translate into practical actions, noting that timely and proactive measures today will help protect natural resources and ensure a prosperous, greener, and sustainable future for coming generations.
