PESHAWAR
The student’s federations held a protest demonstration outside the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on Thursday demanding restoration of erstwhile Fata seats in the National Assembly.
The protesters claimed that the decision was taken without conducting a fresh census in former Fata, adding that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should reverse the decision and restore representation of newly merged areas in the National Assembly.
According to the ECP preliminary delimitation report, six seats of former Fata in the National Assembly have been decreased. However, the commission has said the voters of the relevant constituencies could file their objections on the preliminary report till June 30.
According to the new delimitation, the ECP has abolished six National Assembly seats in the newly merged tribal districts.
The representatives of student’s federations said that a case was pending in the High Court regarding census therefore ECP should not implement its decision until the decision was taken on the issue.
They also threatened If their demands were not met effectively they would announce a sit-in.
They also claimed that the ECP decision pertaining to seat reduction in the National Assembly would be challenged in apex court.
