Imran Khan said we have invested in our youth and they are the real force of change. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government would inaugurate its mega Swat Motorway project today.
Mushtaq Ghani, the Special Assistant to Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, told a news conference that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the first province which is launching construction of 81-kilometre long motorway project.
He added that the project would be completed by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) at an estimated cost of Rs41 billion within 18 months. Mohibullah, the Special Assistant to the chief minister on Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives Development, Mohibullah, and Akbar Ayub, the advisor to the chief minister on communication and works, were also present on the occasion.
Mushtaq Ghani said the Swat Motorway is a befitting answer to political opponents who always blamed the PTI-led government for failure to launch any mega development project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the provincial coalition government had prioritised the education and health sectors under its manifesto of ‘change’.
“As many as 2.1 million children don’t have proper furniture at government schools. There is need for 15,000 additional rooms at these schools to cater to the needs of students,” he pointed out.
He said that more than 40,000 teachers would be recruited to overcome the deficiency at the government educational institutions across the province.
Mushtaq Ghani said the provincial government was not against the construction of roads and bridges, but it had kept focus on social sector development. He added that 2016 has been declared as the mega development project year by the provincial government and these projects would be quite visible and beneficial for the common people.
Briefing the media, Akbar Ayub, advisor communication and works, said the provincial government would provide Rs11 billion for the initial six months of the Rs41 billion Swat Motorway project to the FWO.
Terming it a game-changer, he said it would benefit people of six under-developed districts, generate employment opportunities and curtail the current travelling duration. He explained that the Swat Motorway would be built from the Colonel Sher Khan Shaheed Interchange up to Swat with total six interchanges. He said the project would also be help promote tourism in the region.
About award of the contract to FWO instead of local contractors, Akbar Ayub said it was awarded after competitive bidding and expression of interest (EoI) instead of following single sourcing process to ensure transparency and fairness.
