Communist Party of India–Marxist (CPI-M) MLA M Y Tarigami has called for an all-party meeting to discuss what he termed the “disempowerment” of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and to press for the restoration of statehood, describing it as a crucial test of Indian democracy.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Tarigami urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to convene the proposed meeting, criticizing the weakening of the Legislative Assembly and the continued erosion of the territory’s powers despite what he described as a “historic” public mandate.
He ridiculed the Modi regime’s oft-repeated claim that Jammu and Kashmir is an “integral part” of India, questioning, “If J&K is an integral part, then restore democracy here too.”
The CPI-M leader also expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the territory, stating that people are increasingly harassed on the basis of minor or unsubstantiated allegations. He called for an immediate end to the profiling of mosques and religious leaders, including Imams.
Additionally, Tarigami raised issues related to inadequate disaster relief, reservation policies, and demolition drives, emphasizing that all actions must be carried out within the bounds of law and constitutional guarantees.
