The Teaching Staff Association of Islamia College Peshawar on Wednesday expressed concern over what it described as increasing incidents of harassment against teachers, particularly female faculty members, and warned of a protest campaign if the administration failed to take action.
The warning came during an emergency general body meeting held at Khyber Union Hall and chaired by association president Salahuddin, which was attended by a large number of teachers.
The participants expressed solidarity with a female teacher over an alleged incident that occurred in the university’s Botany Department a day earlier.
According to resolutions unanimously adopted during the meeting, the association demanded that the vice chancellor take action within 24 hours against the students allegedly involved in the incident under the institution’s Students Conduct and Discipline Regulations.
The teachers also called for transparent investigations into all pending incidents and demanded that those responsible be identified to ensure a safe and dignified environment for teaching staff, especially female teachers.
The association warned that if its demands were not met, teachers would boycott academic activities and stage a sit-in outside the vice chancellor’s office from May 18.
According to the Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Seljuk Rehman that an inquiry committee had been constituted after the administration took immediate notice of the matter.
He said the committee would submit its report soon and assured that action would be taken against those found responsible, adding that no compromise would be made on the safety and dignity of teachers.
