PESHAWAR: The transporters community of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday threatened to hold wheel-jam strike tomorrow (Wednesday) if the KP Transport Department did not withdraw the increase in taxes.
They also warned to block the Grand Trunk (GT) Road and Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway for traffic on October 31.Speaking at a news conference here, Noor Muhammad Khan Mohmand, president, Muttahida Transport Workers Federation (MTWF) KP chapter, said the provincial government had adopted a rude attitude towards all the organizations linked with transport field.
Flanked by Zahir Shah Yousafzai, he said the Transport Department had increased taxes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has affected the transporters. He said the KP government via a notification directed the KP Transport Department that all the taxes in the province would be 10 per cent less compared to Punjab.
“But unfortunately the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Transport Department did not pay any heed towards the provincial government’s directives and increased several hundred times in route permit fees,” he lamented. “If the authorities concerned did not get ready for a dialogue, the urban transport community will be compelled to hold a wheel-jam strike on Wednesday” he warned.
