A Seminar on the topic of “Afghanistan’s Current Situation and the Regional Plans for Peace-Building” organized jointly by the University of Peshawar (UoP) and Embassy of the Republic of Korea on 08/12/2021 at SAQ Auditorium, UoP. The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the current deteriorating situation in Afghanistan that may cause visible influx of refugees and rise of terrorism in the region. Various pertinent dimensions of the rising situation was discussed.
On the occasion, Prof. Dr Zahid Anwar Dean Social Sciences University of Peshawar discussed the objectives of the seminar. He said that Afghanistan is passing through critical time, it is facing political and economic crises and external challenges nevertheless there are also opportunities of durable peace and stability. He also highlighted the significance of regional connectivity projects and win win approach for the restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan. He said that the release of freezed assets of Afghanistan will help in easing the economic difficulties of the people. Prof Dr Mohammed Idrees University of Peshawar welcomed all the participants and discussed the teaching and research activities of the oldest and most prestigious University of the province. He also highlighted the economic difficulties of Afghanistan and mentioned close connections between Pakistan and Afghanistan. H.E. Suh Sangpyo, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea elaborated the need of humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and explained how the Republic of Korea provides assistance to Afghan Refugees through Pakistan and UN agencies. He turned the attention of audionce to the existing threats of terrorism. Gen. (r) Asad Durrani in his keynote speech explained the situation in Afghanistan in historical perspective and said that Taliban have learned lessons through a prolong struggle and they have become very diplomatic and smart. Dr Sumeera Imran from NDU discussed strengthening of peace in Afghanistan. Abdul Baseer Manzoor PhD Scholar from Afghanistan drew a very painful picture of the economic difficulties of the people of Afghanistan in this cold winter and underlined the importance of the recognition of Afghanistan. Brig (r) Mahmood Shah in his speech said that for durable peace in Afghanistan inclusive government is necessary. A large number of professors, students, scholars,journalists and officials participated in the seminar
