In the enduring battle against militancy, Pakistan has emerged as a stalwart, making unparalleled contributions and sacrifices. Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir recently conveyed Pakistan’s perspective on regional security, transnational terrorism and the crucial role played by the country’s armed forces in maintaining global peace.
Pakistan, standing as a bulwark against transnational terrorism for decades, has been instrumental in ensuring both regional stability and global security. Positioned as a nation of consequence geopolitically and geo-economically, Pakistan aspires to become a connectivity hub and a gateway to Central Asia and beyond.
According to a news report published on these pages, General Munir, in his interactions with prominent US think tanks and media, emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to eschewing bloc politics. Instead, he underscored the importance of maintaining balanced relationships with all friendly countries, signaling a desire for broadened bilateral engagement with the United States through a long-term, multi-domain partnership.
Addressing the Kashmir issue, General Munir stressed the need for its resolution in alignment with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir and United Nations Security Council resolutions. He asserted that Kashmir is an internationally accepted dispute, and no unilateral action should alter its nature against the wishes of the millions residing in the region.
Furthermore, General Munir highlighted the immediate need to address the sufferings in Gaza, advocating for humanitarian assistance and the implementation of a two-state solution for enduring peace in the region.
According to federal government statistics, the costs of terrorist acts in Pakistan extend beyond the immediate loss of human lives and destruction of property. The nation has suffered a staggering economic toll, estimating a loss of around $35-40 billion since 2001-2002. Terrorism not only inflicts physical damage but also creates uncertainty, reduces confidence, and increases risk perceptions, resulting in lower rates of investment and economic growth.
Pakistan continues to pay a heavy price in terms of both economic and security. A large portion of its resources, both men and material are being consumed by this war for the last several years. The international community needs to recognize sacrifices made by Pakistan in war on terror, as it is doing more than any other country in fighting extremism.
Despite the heavy price paid in both economic and security terms, Pakistan continues to dedicate a significant portion of its resources to the ongoing war on terror. It is imperative for the international community to recognize and acknowledge the sacrifices made by Pakistan, as the nation stands at the forefront in the fight against extremism and terrorism, doing more than any other country.
