PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati and Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi have agreed to review existing laws and strengthen legal protection for women and children in the province. The understanding was reached during a meeting between the speaker and chief minister at the Chief Minister’s House. KP Assembly member and Chief Whip Akbar Ayub Khan also attended the meeting. The participants discussed the overall political situation in the province, law and order, recent incidents and other important matters. They expressed deep concern over the tragic incident involving a minor girl in Haripur and similar incidents reported elsewhere in the province. The speaker and chief minister agreed that existing laws should be reviewed and updated in line with modern requirements to ensure effective protection of citizens, particularly women and children. They observed that legislation alone would not be sufficient to prevent such tragedies and stressed effective implementation of existing laws, administrative measures and accountability of relevant institutions.
