Moscow’s recent rehearsal of a simulated response to a nuclear strike on Russia seems to have put the entire world on tenterhooks as the United States, NATO and other allies have been waiting with a bated breath to see President Vladimir Putin’s next move in what he terms a “special military operation” in Ukraine, which was professedly started to “de-Nazify” Kyiv of rogue elements and thereby stave off any threat to Russia and its people in future. The United States and its allies in Europe and other parts of the world have been pumping more and more lethal arsenals to keep the war machine greased and see Russian forces withdraw from the occupied territories in Ukraine which Moscow annexed last month. However, the Kremlin has defied all calls to take out its forces from Ukraine unless the desired results have been achieved.
With Russia and its sympathizers, like China and North Korea, challenged the unipolar world, Washington has rallies its allies and resources to defeat Moscow, which have triggered threats of nuclear force from Moscow during the war. According to foreign media reports, President Vladimir Putin monitored the nuclear drills, which included an exercise for ground, marine and air strategic defence forces and launches of ballistic and cruise missiles. The exercise involved test-firing of a land-based intercontinental ballistic missile by a Russian nuclear submarine, the Kremlin said on its website, adding all missiles reached their target successfully.
The Biden administration, which has been busy in ear tweaking of Kremlin’s allies and sympathizers, has also rallied countries in the Pacific region behind Washington to ensure that the geo-political situation remains in its favor or at least it is exploited to the US advantage.
However, the US officials’ statements and Washington’s intentional actions to the chagrin of not only about Moscow, but also about the capabilities of other nuclear armed states, like Pakistan, have been adding fuel to the fire and turning the world opinion against the world’s biggest economy.
The US and its allies’ support to Kyiv and their actions in Ukraine have seen the country reduced to rubble as Moscow rained missiles on Ukraine in response to an attack on a key bridge linking Crimea, which was annexed from Ukraine in 2014, set rolling the rumors of a catastrophic war.
They have put in a way that if Russia orders the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine she will have to face “severe consequences”, and the rhetoric goes on without offering any solution for de-escalation, although western powers are keeping quiet on what these might be.
It is needless to say that a nuclear escalation would mean an “incredibly serious mistake” on part of not only Vladimir Putin, but also Ukraine and its supporters including the United States and Europe. The latter has been already teetering from the cut in gas supply to Europe. It is high time for the world to reinforce the arms control obligations and save the planet earth from a total annihilation as the powers that are have been clandestinely engaged in nuclear rhetoric and reckless actions, which are enough to put the survival of humanity at stake.
