The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is implementing a $100 million World Bank-supported project aimed at improving tourism infrastructure, enhancing accessibility to key tourist destinations and strengthening institutional capacity for sustainable tourism development across the province.
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project (KITE) is sponsored by the International Development Association (IDA)-World Bank. The project is being executed by the Project Management Unit of the Communication and Works Department and project management units of the Department of Tourism.
Its objective is to improve tourism infrastructure, enhance accessibility to key tourist destinations and strengthen institutional capacity for sustainable tourism development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The project originally carried a financing amount of $70 million, equivalent to Rs14 billion. The financing was subsequently revised upward to $100 million, equivalent to Rs24.304 billion. In addition to this revised amount, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has committed Rs3 billion for land acquisition under the project.
The revised project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on May 14, 2025. The project is scheduled to close on April 30, 2027.
The revised financing represents an increase of $30 million over the original $70 million amount, taking the total IDA financing for the project to $100 million.
Together with the KP government’s Rs3 billion allocation for land acquisition, the financing supports the project’s stated objectives of improving tourism infrastructure and accessibility while strengthening institutional capacity for sustainable tourism development in the province.
