2000kg fake jaggery (Gurh) seized

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Authority on Friday seized more than 2,000kg of substandard jaggery from a production unit in the Mardan district.
The unit was producing the fake jaggery, locally known as Gurh, by mixing sugar, chemical and non-food grade colors.
According to a press release, the action was on the directives of the authority Director General Shahrukh Ali Khan. The team found the hygiene condition of the unit in a very deplorable area which was operating district Mardan’s Jamoor village.
Sugar, chemicals, spoiled jaggery and unhealthy dyes were being produced in the unit.
The use of sugar, spoiled jaggery and chemicals instead of sugarcane was caught in the production of jaggery.
According to the Food Safety Authority, the sanitation situation in the unit was also found to be very poor, jaggery was being kept on the dirty floor.
The unit was sealed for manufacturing fake jaggery, while large quantities of sugar and spoiled jaggery were also seized.
According to the Food Safety Authority, strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the production of fake jaggery.
DG Shahrukh Ali Khan has issued directives to speed up the series of actions against the units producing substandard and harmful jaggery and said that strict legal action will be taken against the elements who harm the public health.
