Following a reported crises of hike in sugar prices, a flour crisis has now begun to surface, with prices recording a sharp increase in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Peshawar and Nowshera, a 20-kilogram bag of flour has risen by up to Rs. 350, pushing the price to as high as Rs. 1,750. In the provincial capital, the sudden hike has created severe distress for everag and poor citizens.
Previously, a 20kg bag of flour was sold for Rs.1,400, providing some relief to low-income groups. However, dealers now confirm that the mixed flour (20kg) price jumped from Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 1,750 with Rs. 350 increase, fine flour (20kg) price increased by Rs. 250, reaching Rs. 1,850 and super fine flour (20kg) price rose from Rs. 1,450 to Rs. 1,800 with an increase of Rs. 350.
Dealers attribute the surge to rising wheat prices, saying flour mills were forced to pass the cost on to consumers.
The same trend is being witnessed in Nowshera, where a 20kg flour bag that was selling for Rs. 1,400 is now being sold at Rs. 1,800, a hike of Rs. 300 to Rs. 400 within just one week.
The abrupt increase has sparked anger and frustration among the public. Residents described the situation as “oppressive” and demanded urgent action from the authorities to restore previous prices.
