Advisor to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Finance, Muzzammil Aslam, has said that during the tenure of former prime minister Imran Khan, people were able to use electricity freely and did not face the burden of unaffordable power bills.
In a statement, he said that in 2021, around 950,000 electricity consumers across Pakistan were using less than 200 units, while the majority consumed more than 200 units.
However, by 2025, the number of consumers using less than 200 units has risen sharply to 2.07 million.
He added that in 2021, only 34 percent of electricity consumers used less than 200 units, whereas this figure has now increased to 61 per cent.
“This clearly shows that 38 per cent of the population has been forced to reduce electricity consumption due to oppressive power tariffs,” he said, adding that the percentage could be even higher if solar energy usage is also taken into account.
Muzzammil Aslam further stated that, according to a government survey, a large segment of the population has been pushed to the point of having only one proper meal a day, consisting of basic items such as bread, milk and lentils.
He said that meat has become unaffordable for most people, highlighting the severe impact of inflation and rising utility costs on the public.
