The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) president Zia Shahid and Secretary General Aijazul Haq have clarified the CPNE’s principled stance on the issue of handing the issue of Dawn Leaks over through report by inquiry body headed by Justice Amir Raza Khan to APNS and said that APNS is a sister organization representing newspaper owners and publishers. In a statement through a press release issued yesterday (Thursday) they said that CPNE respects APNS.
However, CPNE represents the editors of newspapers. Since it is the editor who oversees the publication of news stories and is considered responsible for publishing them, the editor is the one who is held responsible for whatever is published in the paper he edits. Any action taken for any story published in the paper also taken against him. Since editors is responsible for the contents, the matter of Dawn Leaks falls under the purview of their organization, CPNE.
They said that traditionally special joint committees of CPNE and APNS had been formed on important issues concerning newspapers. The purpose of these joint committees has been to enable them to address the issue from all aspects including administrative or editorial. Joint decisions were made after investigation.
They said that in the case of Dawn Leaks, the contents of the letter issued with the signatures of the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary apparently refer the matter to APNS, we think it necessary to record the principled stand of CPNE.
The CPNE President and Secretary General also stated that neither the council has anything to say about the report by Justice Amir Raza Khan, nor has any objection on handing over the issue to APNS but it through necessary to make principled stance known and therefore, the statement is being issued.
