Kidney patients protest against non-provision of free medicine

Dozens of kidney patients staged a protest here on Tuesday against the government for stopping provision of free supply of kidney transplant medicines to poor patients of the province. The protesters gathered outside the Peshawar Press Club and chanted slogans against the government.
The protestors demanded the authorities to ensure availability of free treatment for patients suffering from the kidney diseases and facilities of transplant free of cost. “Please have mercy on us by ensuring early recovery so that we can continue our treatment,” they chanted slogans.
The demonstration was led by Azghar Khan and a large number of other patients who were carrying placards and banners in their hands on which their demands were written.
They claimed that more than one thousand people were waiting for the kidney transplant process in the province, adding that patients who were suffering from kidney disease belonged to very poor families.
Protesters said that the provincial government was providing free medicine for those suffering from Kidney Disease but since February it has been stopped.
The patients were paying Rs30,000 to Rs 50,000 for purchasing monthly medicines, they demanded the government to ensure availability of free medicines as they were unable to buy medicines on their own.
The patients suffering from kidney disease have demanded from the Chief Minister and the Provincial Minister of Health to provide relief by issuing orders to quarters concerned for the early restoration of free medicines so that our treatment could be done on time.
