KP: South Waziristan confirms first case of polio

The national polio laboratory at National Institute of Health Islamabad on Friday confirmed the first polio case this year from district South Waziristan’s tehsil Shakai.
The provincial health department said that it was the first case in the district as all polio cases that have been reported this year are from North Waziristan.
The provincial spokesperson for polio Aimal Khan told media reporters that “this is the first case reported from South Waziristan and the 19th case from Southern KP and Pakistan.
He maintained that so far this year, 16 cases were reported from North Waziristan, two from Lakki Marwat and one from South Waziristan. “The genetic analysis of the case is under process,” he added.
As per the KP health department, the southern districts of the province, including North and South Waziristan, DI Khan, Bannu, Tank and Lakki Marwat are at a high risk of polio virus.
