Speakers stress on religion’s help in fight against climate change

Speakers at a seminar stresses the role of religious representatives to guide society to play their due role in combating the challenges posed by the climatic changes and environmental degradation.
The conference on climate change was organized by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University (SBBWU) in collaboration with Pakistan Council of World Religions Faith Friends here on Tuesday.
On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor SBBWU Dr Safia Ahmed said that climate change is an important issue of the planet at this time, adding that its university has started the Climate Change Cell in 2017 to enhance public capacity through public awareness research to minimize the impact of climate change through public awareness.
“The university is working with national and international institutions to avoid the harm of climate change,” she added.
The founder members of Pakistan Council of World Religions, Haroon Sarb Dayal and Bishop Humphrey Sarfraz Peter, expressed their views and said that people are returning to religion and nature. They maintained that unsustainable utilization of nature has faced humanity with many critical challenges.
Vice-Chancellor Engineering University, Professor Dr Jahan Bakht said that global warming is a direct result of environmental degradation.
“We depend on water, if we do not manage to save this water properly from pollution, we will face severe water shortage in 2025,” he added.
Dr Farhan Shams, Chairperson, Department of Environmental Sciences, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan, gave a detailed briefing on how to protect climate change from negative effects through a presentation.
He said that global warming is happening due to greenhouses. He also told about the effects of climate change on Pakistan. He said that floods and floods in the country are causing great destruction and work must be done to prevent it.
On this occasion, Qari Ruhollah Madani, Chairman of Pakistan Council of World Religions, said that our organization has been working in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since 2004.
He said that representatives of different religions should play their role in environment protection and spread awareness about climate change.
At the end, chief guest, former federal minister for religious affairs Noorul Haq Qadri distributed shields among the speakers of the conference and highlighted the role of religious scholars in tackling the issue of climate change.
