Accepting the plea challenging legality of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s detention under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) on Thursday, Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared the arrest illegal and issued directives to release Qureshi after receiving undertaking in the matter. Besides, a single-member bench of the IHC comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb also passed an order to release the wife of PTI leader and former Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Khan Afridi.
On May 16, Islamabad Police arrested Shehryar Khan Afridi along with his non-political wife Rabia Shehryar in the wee hours of Tuesday as authorities use pretrial detention as a punishment for the opposition party.

On May 11, former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was arrested under the MPO from Gilgit-Baltistan House in Islamabad following the violent protests in the country after the arrest of ex-premier Imran Khan on May 09.

It is pertinent to mention here that the police had launched a crackdown against PTI leaders and workers following the ‘violent protests’ held after the arrest of party chairman Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust Case.

Police have also nabbed PTI central leader Shireen Mazari from her residence in Islamabad. In a tweet, Shireen Mazari’s daughter, Iman Mazari reported saying the police have taken her mother again. A heavy number of police reached PTI leader Shireen Mazari’s residence to arrest her despite court orders. TLTP
