In a world that has been grappling with the impacts of climate change, the actions of individuals can often be overshadowed by the enormity of the challenge staring the humanity in the face. However, every once in a while, a single individual emerges, who defies the odds and who showcases the power of dedication and resolve. Such is the inspiring tale of one man who single-handedly spearheaded a tree plantation drive, transforming a barren mountain into a thick forest in the beautiful Ayun Valley of Chitral, taking the climate fight to a new level in Pakistan.
Meet Zia Ur Rehman, a retired soldier from the Pakistan Army. With his dedication and commitment, he has succeeded in turning a barren mountain into a green thick forest. Witnessing the devastating effects of deforestation and the increasing ferocity and frequency of natural disasters in his beloved mountains land Chitral, Rehman decided to take matters into his own hands.
Being a soldier armed with unwavering determination and an unyielding commitment to nature, he embarked on a mission that would change the landscape, quite literally. Now there are about 700 pomegranate trees on this barren mountain with dozens of walnut, apricot, pistachio, grape and other fruit trees as well. Similarly, many flower plants have also been planted on the hillside, which captivate the hearts of onlookers and tourists alike.
Published on these pages, Zia Ur Rehman, while narrating his story, says that bringing water to such a large number of plants had been a real challenge. In this work, Haji Mehboob Azam, a well-known personality of Ayun Valley, where the mountain forest is located, assured Rehman of all out support and cooperation. Haji Mehboob also contributed a great deal to this plantation drive.
Undeterred by the magnitude of the task at hand, Rehman with the support of Haji Mehboob began his journey by reaching out to local communities and government officials. His passion soon garnered support from both the local water management department to provide for water for the plants.
Years of tireless and selfless efforts paid off as the mountain began its transformation from a barren wasteland to a thriving forest. The returning wildlife breathed life into the ecosystem, ensuring the revival of biodiversity.
The campaign initiated by Rehman has brought life back to the barren mountain of Ayun Valley. However, the road to success was not without obstacles. He had to tackle a host of challenges, including a scarcity of resources, unfavorable weather conditions and logistical issues. But he refused to let setbacks dampen his spirit. He demonstrated the power of unwavering determination. Rehman’s effort has become a shining example of ecological restoration and sustainable development and serves as a catalyst for change, igniting a nationwide movement to combat deforestation and climate change. His story serves as an inspiration for us all, reminding us that when it comes to safeguarding our planet, every small effort counts.
