PML-N legal team all set to file Nawaz’s bail plea in IHC next week

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz legal team has been given a go-ahead to file a protective bail application in the high court on behalf of party supremo Nawaz Sharif.
Sources said that the PML-N legal team held a consultative meeting and mulled over submitting a petition to the high court seeking protective bail for Nawaz Sharif in a case in which the latter was convicted.
Sources divulged that the PML-N lawyers would file the bail application in the Islamabad High Court on October 16 or 17. Nawaz Sharif has given his assent to the lawyers to file the petition on his behalf.
The PML-N supremo who was serving a sentence in jail following his conviction in a corruption case had left the country in November 2019 after getting permission from the Islamabad High Court which allowed him to go to the United Kingdom to get medical treatment for his ailment.
In February 2020, the then government had declared Nawaz Sharif an absconder, and later in the same year, an accountability court had declared him a proclaimed offender in the Toshakhana vehicles reference.
It bears mentioning that in June 2023, both houses of the parliament passed the Elections (Amendment) Act 2023, which empowered the Election Commission of Pakistan to unilaterally fix the date for elections and also limits the lawmakers’ disqualification period to five years with retrospective effect. This Act may benefit Nawaz Sharif.
In June, an accountability court also acquitted Nawaz Sharif in a reference pertaining to the alleged illegal allotment of plots in 1986.
Nawaz Sharif has been living in Britain for the last four years in self-exile and has decided to return on Oct 21.
The PML-N legal team is busy these days to remove all legal hurdles in Nawaz’s return to the homeland.
