A group of hundreds of rickshaw drivers and cart pushers stormed the University of Peshawar (UoP), protesting the administration’s decision to ban their entry into the university premises.
According to the university spokesperson Ali Imran, the protesters forcibly entered the premises and kept the staff members of the administration block hostage for a period of three hours.
The university administration has lodged a case against individuals who attacked the administration department, Ali Imran said and added that the protesters, allegedly supported by a political figure with contracting interests, also stole government valuables from the university.
He said that the university administration has imposed a complete ban on the entry of cart pushers and rickshaws into the premises. The ban aims to maintain law and order on campus.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the UoP held and expressed outrage over the incident. In response, the JAC unanimously decided to close the university indefinitely, starting from Friday (today).
The committee has called for a protest gathering at KMC Chowk at 9 am, where all teachers, staff, and employees, including class IV and sanitation staff were instructed to assemble and demonstrate against the incident.
The JAC has taken this decisive action to condemn the incident and demand justice for those affected.
