Crackdown on professional beggars expanded in Peshawar

District administration Peshawar has decided to extend the crackdown on professional beggars from the provincial capital to its suburban areas and intensify operations.
The decision was taken in a review meeting, chaired by the Commissioner of Peshawar Division, held to assess the progress of the campaign against beggars, said a handout.
SSP Operations Masood Bangash, Additional Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Hashim Rao, District Officer Social Welfare Noor Muhammad, and other relevant officials attended the meeting.
Officials informed the commissioner that over 300 individuals have been taken into custody under the Gadagari Act, and legal proceedings have been initiated.
Minor children found begging have been transferred to welfare institutions, where they are provided with free education, training, accommodation, food, and other essential facilities.
Additionally, eight individuals involved in using contractors for organized begging have been arrested, with cases registered against them.
The forum was informed that authorities have also identified 16 more individuals who will soon be apprehended, and their details have been shared with the relevant police stations.
To ensure the sustainability of the operation, the commissioner has issued orders to assign permanent duties to officials, aiming to permanently eliminate professional beggars from Peshawar.
