Govt, PTA, PEMRA put on notice in petition against amendment in PECA

PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court (PHC) has issued notice to federal government, PTA and PEMRA on petition against amendment in PECA act. Petition filed against amendment in PECA act came up for hearing before two members bench of PHC comprising Justice Arshid Ali and Justice Jawad Ahsan Ullah Wednesday. Noman Mohib counsel for petitioner was of the view sentences have been introduced on wrong and false news by making amendment in PECA act. Amendment has been made in several sections including section 26-A of PECA act but amendment is vague and fake news has not been explained that which will be fake news. Counsel for petitioner said this amendment runs contrary to article 19 and 19-A of the constitution because article 19 gives freedom of expression. This amendment is attack on democracy, human rights and accountability. This amendment has been made to stifle voice of opposition. The court while issuing notice to federal government, PTA and PEMRA has sought reply from respondents within one month. Online
