DI KHAN
The Wildlife Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 32 Koonj (crane) birds during an operation conducted by the Dera Ismail Khan Wildlife Division.
Acting on the special instructions of Conservator Wildlife South Niaz Muhammad, a team led by Divisional Wildlife Officer Malik Khan and Sub-Divisional Wildlife Officer Malik Saqib Khan intercepted a passenger bus bound for Karachi within the limits of Police Station Gomal University on the Indus Highway.
During the search, officials recovered 32 Koonj birds, including 26 alive and 6 dead.
A case was registered against the accused under the KP Wildlife and Biodiversity Act, 2015, and a fine of Rs140,000 was imposed.
The recovered birds have been shifted to Wildlife Park Dera Ismail Khan for proper care and rehabilitation.
Chief Conservator of Wildlife Dr. Mohsin Farooq lauded the performance of the DI Khan team, stating that the department remains committed to wildlife protection, curbing smuggling, and raising public awareness in line with the vision of the provincial government.
