Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has systematically sought to attack and undermine the Constitution of India, crafted with dedication by the Constituent Assembly under Dr B.R. Ambedkar. He further claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have actively advanced this agenda.
Ramesh made the remarks in a post on X, coinciding with Constitution Day. He said the RSS has long aimed to subvert the Constitution’s principles, which were established to secure equality, justice, and democracy for all citizens.
Recalling the history of India’s Constitution, Ramesh noted that on November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly, presided over by Dr Rajendra Prasad, formally adopted the draft Constitution. He highlighted the pivotal role of Dr Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee and worked tirelessly despite ill health, alongside other key members including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Ramesh also referenced C. Rajagopalachari, then Governor-General, who acknowledged Dr Ambedkar’s leading role in Guwahati, calling it “the greatest triumph of non-violence” and praising the collaboration with Nehru and Patel in steering the Constitution.
He stressed that the RSS had no role in framing the Constitution, but after its adoption, it focused on undermining it. “This agenda of subversion is being carried forward by the present Prime Minister and Home Minister through calculated attempts to erode constitutional principles, provisions, and practices,” Ramesh said.
He added that Constitution Day should serve as a reminder of Dr Ambedkar’s legacy and the importance of defending India’s constitutional values against attempts to weaken them.
